Liver of Sulfur Patina: How To

Liver of Sulfur Patina

I had a very good question presented to me today.  "Connie, what do you do to your copper pieces to make them blackened in places?"  The answer is I use Liver of Sulfur patina on most of my finished pieces.  In the past, I have purchased and used the "chunky" form of this patina.  I disliked the chunky type because it would neutralize over time and I'd end up throwing it away.  It's now available in liquid and gel form which is "stabilized" and will not perish over time.  It's a little pricey, but goes a long way and does last for quite some time.

I'm going to attach a video created by Cool Tools which is where I buy my patina from.  One common mistake that people make when using patina is they don't make the water hot enough.  I make my water about as hot as a cup of coffee and it works great!  Also - this patina ONLY works on uncoated wire.  Artistic non tarnish wire will not work with patina.  If you have any questions about this patina, or how I use it, please don't hesitate to post them here.
